Kattameya Observatory Ride 2014, First Chapter

April 25th, 2014

The response was great, with 14 riders at the top of the Observatory, although only 5 did the complete ride from Maadi and back, or beyond. Most of them started the ride at the Cairo toll booth, among which a bunch of new faces with lots of young blood, all strong riders. Welcome and great job!

Great fun but great pain also, as temperature was up to 30° at the end, the cross (NNW) wind reached 22 km/h and the route extended for 149 km with elevation of 1000 m. Fortunately, without a khamseen this time.
However, the toughness of the ride was mainly due to the high pace, which always increased as the ride progressed. This, together with only one puncture, allowed us to be back in the Greco at the family friendly hour of 11:45 am, earlier than ever.

It’s time to give some recognition to the highly motivated athletes. The awards are:
-Longest distance ridden: Omar Khairy, a.k.a. Omar II, with 173 km !
-Best Sprinter: Omar Mustafa, a.k.a. Omar I, alias O. Lord: took 2 sprints and lost one by photo finish.
-KOM: Nick, unbeaten so far on this climb in 4 attempts; broke his own record by 11”. This hill should be named after him when he leaves Egypt.
-Best pacemaker: Thomas, recorded the highest average: 32.2 km/h over 4h33’ moving time. As always, he provided vehicle support.

See below how old and new faces are happy to have been part of this ride at its highest point.

Thanks Luis for the write-up (and the offer of naming rights!) Mohamed el Sayed deserves an honourable mention for pushing very hard on the climb. Now he knows where the end-point is, I;m sure he will be the guy to beat next time
