Helwan Maiden Ride, finally!

Feb. 7, 2014

The ride had been planned since last year, when it was postponed due to adverse weather conditions. It finally took place and certainly met the expectations, as riders eager to try new routes were enticed by the new 36 km long remarkable road from the Ain Soukhna road bridge to the Helwan crossing, which offered the ideal playground for high quality cycling.

The turn up was 16 riders: the Egyptian contingent put four, all eleven CCC core riders made it, plus Rick, the new rider who replaced Paul as the only Aussi in the club (to compensate a bit for 2 Kiwis). The photo below at the finish line with the scenic Helwan background was missed by Jun and Dave, who unfortunately were waiting at the other Mobil station a km before. It was not the only mishap about the meeting points, but next time we will make it better.

Ride statistics: 103 km, NE wind of 10 km/h, average 15° C, total elevation 926 m. The new 36 km leg, predominantly downhill, was covered by the top suspects Thomas, Nick and Dan in under 44’ with an average speed of 49.6 km/h! The poursuivants arrived scattered in closely spaced small groups.

Kudos to Pascal, the father of the ride. Not only did he ride the whole stage but was also powered by who knows what he took for breakfast. Great comebacks by Sherif and Pat. Thanks to Catherine, June, Thomas and Apache for providing the vehicles that took us from Helwan back to Maadi.

Looking forward to riding the second chapter or varieties of this new ride, which will become part of the regular schedule.

Luis
